Day 1 of weaning: Avocado fingers + avocado mash. Read avocado as a first food for babies.
The first week
The first week or so of weaning isn’t about quantity – it’s all about exploration and first tastes
What matters most is that your baby is experiencing food: its smells, textures, colours, and how it feels in their mouth (or on the floor!)
What do I recommend?
I usually recommend to start with:
~A soft finger food like a ripe avocado slice or a roasted courgette baton
~A puréed or mashed single veg if you’re starting with spoon feeding
~A combo: a little purée/mash on a pre-loaded spoon with a finger food alongside
~Or even just let them explore a small spoon or bowl to start with!
Day 2 of weaning: Broccoli fingers + broccoli mash. Read broccoli as a first food for babies.
What to focus on?
~One ‘meal’ a day is plenty to start with- this could be at lunchtime or whenever your baby is happiest
~Offer a small amount only at first- a couple of spoons of purée or 2–3 finger foods is more than enough to explore
~Sit together for meals as much as you can- your baby will learn so much just from watching you eat and enjoy food. Show your baby how to pick the food up, put it in your mouth and demonstrate chewing and swallowing for them
~Milk continues to be the main source of nutrition at this stage
YOUR GUIDE TO THE FIRST WEEK
A strong start with solids can lay the foundations for your baby’s future health and taste preferences. It all starts with those first tastes…
What next?
Once your baby is comfortable with a few vegetables, it’s time to start introducing iron, fat and protein-rich foods.
Offering iron-rich solid food is essential for babies as stores from birth start to deplete from around 6 months of age. Foods with iron, also contain other key nutrients for babies like protein, fat, zinc, iodine and omega-3’s.

Cod is one of my favourite first foods for babies. Fish is nutrient dense and packed with protein, iron, and also iodine and omega-3 - which both support healthy development. Check out this baked garlic butter cod recipe baby recipe, suitable from 6 months.
